Art and Design

Entry Level 3 Award in creative craft

This qualification is designed to support engagement in learning and progression to Level 1 qualifications.

This qualification will:

  • Provide opportunities to acquire basic practical skills in creative craft.

The objectives of this qualification are to:

  • Introduce learners to craft and design materials
  • Allow learners to combine materials to create an art or craft item whilst working safely and using appropriate personal protective equipment.

Level 1 Award in Creative Craft

This qualification aims to:

  • Enable learners to develop basic skills in craft
  • Provide learners with underpinning knowledge of the craft process
  • Provide learners with a basis for progression into further study in craft-related areas.

The objectives of this qualification are to help learners to:

  • Develop a portfolio of work in craft
  • Use materials, tools and equipment correctly and safely
  • Develop an understanding of health and safety considerations in the craft environment.

Level 1/Level 2GCSE (9-1) in Art and Design (Fine Art)

Art and Design equips students with the skills to enjoy, produce and engage with the visual arts throughout their lives, and it has immense value as a GCSE subject. GCSE Art and Design provides the opportunity for students to:

  • Explore both contemporary and historical sources of art, craft and design first hand through, for example:
  • Visiting museums, galleries, art shows and fairs
  • Experiencing audio-visual productions, including still and moving imagery o their surroundings and environments
  • Take an individual approach to their art, craft and design making
  • Develop the skills of selecting their best and most appropriate work for presentation

Is this course right for me?

On this one year course you will learn by completing projects and assignments based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. You will sample a range of vocational areas such as Art Practice, 2D and 3D Design. You will develop your understanding of materials and techniques and explore new ideas by creative use of drawing, painting and sculpture, and the use of visual language to communicate these ideas effectively.

All students who may have not achieved a minimum grade 4 in GCSE English or Maths will continue to work towards either a GCSE or Functional Skills qualification as part of their timetable.

Each candidate must create a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates achievement of all the learning outcomes and assessment criteria associated with each unit. On completion of each unit candidates must declare that the work produced is their own.  The main pieces of evidence for the portfolio could include (in no particular order):

• Assessor observation – completed observational checklists and related action plans
• Witness testimony
• Candidate’s proof of work
• Worksheets
• Assignments/projects/reports
• Record of professional discussion
• Record of oral and written questioning • candidate and peer reports
• Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).


NCFE Level 3 Award in Creative Craft

  • Learners who achieve this qualification could progress to: • NCFE Level 1 Award in Creative Craft • NCFE Level 1 Award in Personal and Social Development • NCFE Level 1 Award in Exploring Occupational Studies for the Workplace • NCFE Level 1 Award in Employability Skills
